Humidity effects on screw air compressor perfromance

The humidity of the air changes with the condition of air. When the air compressed, its temperature rises and the relative humidity decreases; when the compressed air expands, and the temperature of the air falls, its relative humidity increases; usually, there will be moisture be released. So, what effect does air humidity have on air compressors?

When the screw air compressor sucks in moist air from the outside and compresses it, the density of vapour increases and the temperature rises. The compressed air cools the relative humidity increases. If the temperature continues to fall to 100% relative humidity, it is saturated and can't hold any more water. If the temperature continues to fall, then there will be water release from the air, which may cause erosion inside the air compressor, such as the oil separator and oil drum cover. Moreover, the air contains too much moisture, and it will also increase the airflow resistance of the air compressor pipeline. Because we need to use air, more water will reduce the air, so it will also affect the volumetric efficiency of the gas, also reducing the effect of lubricating oil.
effect of air humidity on compressor performance

The direct influence of air humidity on the rotary screw compressors:

1. The moisture in the air will increase the airflow resistance of the air compressor pipeline;
2. Affect the volumetric efficiency of the gas;
3. Not conducive for the compression of the machine, this will expose the compression equipment to hydraulic power shocks. If the air cooler and cylinder store a large amount of water, it will also cause damage to the machine;
4. The moisture in the air is erosive, which makes the compression equipment easy to rust and shortens the service life;
5. The water in the gas mixed with the lubricating oil during the compression process, which will reduce the lubricating efficiency and increase the abrasion of the machine parts.
6. At the same time, most of the vapour is condensed when the compressed air passes through the air compressor accessories, air cooler air tank and pipeline so that the air displacement will reduce.
7. The air supply system contains water. When the temperature is lower than 0 degrees, the water will freeze on the inner wall of the pipelines. Similarly, reduce the pipe diameter, and worse, sometimes even cause individual pipelines to freeze completely, blocking the compressed air delivery of pipeline.

Therefore, if the user uses an air compressor high temperature and humidity place, please do some dehumidification work. For example, install a dehumidifier, maintaining ventilation, lowering the temperature, etc., to reduce the moisture in the air.
